Maintenance Section Offices are the second administrative subdivision under TxDOT Districts and Area Engineers. Maintenance Section boundaries often coincide with individual county boundaries, but not necessarilly.

The Geospatial Roadway Inventory Database application, a.k.a. "GRID," is the "system of record" for storing roadway maintenance designation. The maintenance office designation for each of TxDOT's roadways is coded onto individual segments of roadway, rather than being stamped onto the roadways based on a polygon in GIS, like a cookie cutter. The linear maintenance section data is then used to create/update maintenance section polygons in GIS. These polygons are generalized for mapping on a statewide scale rather than on an individual roadbed scale.
